Qualifications

1 You must be 18 years of age or be 18 by the General Election.

2 You must be a United States Citizen.

3 You must have resided in North Carolina and in the precinct you are registered for thirty days prior to the upcoming election.

4 You must have your rights of citizenship.  If you have been convicted of a felony you have lost these rights.  You must complete your probation in order to have them restored and be eligible to register.

5 If plan to send your registration in by mail, please note the new identification requirement, effective January 2003.


Registration Deadline

The deadline to register to vote in North Carolina is 25 days before the day of the election. Forms that are received by the county board of elections office or postmarked by the deadline are accepted as valid applications for the upcoming election. Also, agency and DMV voter registration transactions that are completed by the deadline are accepted as valid for the upcoming election. Applicants will be notified by the county board of elections of their precinct and polling place assignments.


HOW TO REGISTER AND VOTE DURING ONE-STOP ABSENTEE

 

If a North Carolina resident has missed the 25 day deadline for voter registration, he/she may register and vote during One-Stop Absentee Voting.

 

To vote during One-Stop Absentee Voting, a resident must fill out a voter registration application and prove residency by providing appropriate identification with current name and current address.  The new registrant may vote ONLY at a One-Stop Absentee Voting Site in the county of registration during One-Stop Absentee Voting and not on Election Day.


Acceptable forms of identification include:

·        A North Carolina driver’s license with current address

·        A utility bill with name and current address

Ø      A telephone or mobile phone bill

Ø      An electric or gas bill

Ø      A cable television bill

Ø      A water or sewage bill

·        A document with name and current address from a local, state, or U.S. government agency:

Ø      A passport

Ø      A government-issued photo ID

Ø      U.S. military ID

Ø      A license to hunt, fish, own a gun, etc.

Ø      A property tax bill

Ø      Automotive registration

Ø      Certified documentation of naturalization

Ø      A public housing or Social Service Agency document

Ø      A check, invoice, or letter from a government agency

Ø      A birth certificate

·        A student photo ID along with a document from the school showing the student’s name and current address.

·        A paycheck or paycheck stub from an employer or a W-2 statement

·        A bank statement or bank-issued credit card statement

 

Proof of residence does not include any piece of mail addressed to the voter.
If you cannot supply acceptable Proof-of-Residence, your registration form cannot be processed until the required information is provided.


Other Information

You must complete a voter registration application and provide the following: full name, physical and mailing address, date of birth, and signature. If mailing in your application please note there is a new identification requirement.

NC provides permanent voter registration. However, voters may be removed from the voter registration records for the following reasons: a felony conviction, moving from the county, death, by request from the voter, or if the voter has not voted in any election within eight consecutive years and had no contact with the Board of Elections.


Identification Requirement

If this form is submitted by mail and you are a new registrant in this county and you do not have a driver’s license or social security number, you must send with your application, either a.) a copy of current and valid photo ID or b.) a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document showing your name and address. If you do not provide this information you will be required to provide it the first time you vote.

PARTY AFFILIATION

You may register with any political party recognized in the State of North Carolina. Party affiliation determines the primary in which a voter is eligible to vote. During a partisan primary election, an unaffiliated voter may only vote if a party authorizes unaffiliated voters to vote in their primary.
